Wood Brothers // 1-22-15 // Wonder Ballroom

20150122WoodBrothers9The Wood Brothers made their triumphant return to Portland for a sold out show at the Wonder Ballroom.  Intent on making up for last years canceled show during the snowstorm in February, the band delivered a 90+ minute set that included two encores.

The Wood Brothers are made up of Chris and Oliver Wood and their adopted brother Jano Rix, who provides the percussive beat via a drum kit and the “shuitar”, a one-of-a-kind custom guitar rigged with various percussion devices to provide a truly unique sound.   Chris is a master of developing deep grooves on his beat up acoustic bass and Oliver’s vocal style and songwriting skills are straight from the front porch.

The set weaved through songs from the new album, The Muse, older classics like “Shoefly Pie” and “Luckiest Man,” and a couple of covers including The Band’s “Ophelia” and Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels”.  The highlight of the set was when the band gathered around a single microphone with the two members of Mandolin Orange (opening band).
