Marco Benevento // 3-13-15 // Mississippi Studios

20150313MarcoBeneventoBefore the show started I had an opportunity to get a close look at Marco’s “Frankenstein” piano adorned with multiple pedals, custom electronics and even a faux taxidermy bust of a buffalo. Whether it’s intentional or not I believe the buffalo is symbolic of the beast inside slaying those piano keys.

Benevento’s style and songwriting are infectious and had the sold out Friday night crowd dancing their asses off into the wee hours. Marco Benevento started playing the piano at age 7 and was trained in classical and jazz. Now at age 37, he has been playing long enough to incorporate this classical training into deep improvisational grooves that almost always lead to a raucous dance party. On his last visit to the Portland area he had the entire Galaxy Barn Pickathon shaking until 2 am.

The remainder of the trio includes drummer Andy Borger and bassist Dave Dreiwitz, formerly of the band Ween. The band weaved through many songs off their newest album, Swift, as well as a number of impeccable covers including “Heartbeats” (The Knife) and “Let’s Spend the Night Together” (Rolling Stones).
